Pre-exam cram ... need to absorb information fast?
- Time's running out and you're panicking. Panic stops you absorbing information. But the more you think about how much you have to learn ... the more you panic ... the less you can focus and learn?
Research shows both human beings and our close cousins, the primates, put off working really hard and consistently until a deadline is close to hand. This behaviour is related to the chemical dopamine, which the brain releases when we're in a panic. We can do much better if we learn to pace ourselves, reduce stress and be less dependant on the release of "panic chemicals"
|
| Typical Symptoms |
Our Solutions |
- A lot of material to absorb
- Deadline close to hand; too much to absorb in too little time?
- Concentration disturbances
- Feeling that your mind is blank
- Physical and mental exhaustion
- Feeling overwhelmed and panic-stricken
- Focus on irrelevant details puts you off getting down to work
|
- It's better to learn less material carefully than scan everything and then quickly forget it.
- Carefully scan your study material ... what is most important? Create a proper study plan, so that you are giving most attention to the most important bits.
- Don't study non-stop. Take short but frequent breaks.
- Keep well hydrated! Drink water and avoid stimulants like coffee and tea.
- Eat proper meals at proper intervals ... avoid too many carbohydrates and refined sugars, they will slow you down.
- Listen to Alphamusic while you work. Yes! You would be amazed at the results some of our university students have enjoyed by using "
Silence of Peace" and "Silence of Spirit" when working. They report significant improvements in retention of information.
- Plan for the end of your studying day. Stop, take time out and to listen to Alphamusic - let your brain relax and unwind.
"Silence of Heart" and "Amber" are great for this.
- Don't forget to get plenty of sleep ... we need delta state too!
